GROSSOLOGY.
Thats what i learnt on Thursday. Never mess with the insides of things you're about to eat for lunch and that being a doctor is a bad idea, a pathologist a worst one.
Apparatus ready. Scalpel, ready. Tweezers, ready. Scissors, check.
... and i didnt know how to start. LOL.
All i did was poke at it with the scalpel and when i tried to sluice through it for a cross-section the muscles were so tough the tip got stuck and i, er, started getting squeamish.
Took us ages to get that heart open..before we figured out that the scissors were a better idea. And also that we couldnt locate any aorta, pulmonary vein, or any other recognisable features except some tiny little strands on the walls which we hadnt any idea what it was in the first place. Holly shyyytee. XD
But since my dad had nothing better to do other than get me three chicken hearts, i decided to try my luck at the second one. For some reason it was thinner and slimmer. Poor chicken didnt have as much protein as the first.
Well. At least it was a more successful second dissection. :D
We found the missing aorta after all! XD
Should have thought of this earlier.
My awesome two specimens and me. :D
After that we brought out the big guns...and started firing away.
More like tearing it apart, poor fish. D:
I couldnt even bring myself to just open the gills. After Anushya opened them and we saw those gilly gills we didnt dare to go further till Suhana came and ripped the insides open..literally.
Yup.
You had no idea how ganas Suhana seemed pulling the kembung's insides out after all our dainty poking and pulling.
And so, with our dainty poking and pulling method, we set to work searching for that tiny fish heart. Which, by the way, we mistakened a good many other bits and pieces of organs for.
I couldnt help doing a bit of carving. :D The flesh looked waaaaayy too inviting hahah.
Eventually we did find that heart..or at least we think its the heart. Unfortunately i think we also battered it a little too much to the point of beyond recognition. D:
How was i to know it was that lembik after the toughness of the chicken heart? And we poked the rest of the organs and not one got a tiny nick. Especially those disgusting intestines and liver.
I was fine. Initially.
(Jia, when taking a normal photo switch back to auto laaaah haiyo. Digital macro mana bolehhh lol.)
I didnt get to grab more photos after that. Cam died from lack of battery, sadly. -.-'
But the smell and sight of the horribly gross juices and blood and organs stayed with me all the way till BM and made me feel like puking and also praying that my mum didnt fry any fish for lunch.
And Suhana's words while she was disemboweling the fish with her bare hands(we were wearing gloves and still felt squeamish, gawd) were still ringing in my head as she was telling us that as women, we should not feel squeamish and that we should get used to it as it is part of normal life.
O.O......?
I beg her pardon? My future husband can go disembowel our dinner fish for all i care! Because i'm not slicing a fish's tummy open and see all those grey swollen jelly-like intestines start oozing out again. D:
Okayy i'm already feeling ill just uploading and looking at those photos. Stomach wishes to throw up now.
(Thnx jia for being the cameraman, although my cammie died lol XD)
